Produced from 1994 to 2000, these front wheel drives won Japanese Car of the Year 94-95 for their superior performance, chassis and its INVECS-II (Intelligent and Innovative Vehicles Electronic Control System II) sports automatic transmission which is a tiptronic style gearbox with adaptive shift control going down hill and during acceleration that learns and adapts to its owners driving habits and adjusts itself to suit the driver and the situation. The transmission can also switch to sports mode (manual change).
After August 1997 the FTO received the famous "face lift" with a change to the front bumper creating larger air intake, a deeper front splitter and new housings for additional lights. It also received additional safety equipment such as ABS, twin airbags and traction control.
The 6 cylinder GR, GX GP & GXP are the only models eligible for import (the 4 cylinder GS is not eligible.) The GPX & the GP version R models have the MIVEC engine (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing & Electronic Control) for a smoother ride.
